Purge’s Game Thoughts: New Oblivion Content: “The Wizard’s Tower” Impressions (360)

The Wizard’s Tower downloadable content is now available on the Xbox 360 Marketplace for 150 points. This download is 7.52MB and features many useful items for mages and other magic based characters. Bethesda’s first two outings into the downloadable content realm were somewhat lackluster, so let’s see if the third time’s a charm.

"In the frozen mountains of Cyrodiil stands Frostcrag Spire, a tower of wonders for your magic-oriented character to call home."
After loading up a game save, a quest message appears explaining that you have inherited the deed to a piece of property called Frostcrag Spire from a long-lost relative. The location is marked on your map. Frostcrag Spire is located east of Bruma, and of course you can just fast travel there if you do not feel like hiking up through the mountains.
Once you arrive at the tower, you stumble upon a tome that gives you directions to restore its functions. In order to do this, you need to purchase several items from Aurelinwae at the Mystic Imporium in the Imperial City. These items include:
- Frostcrag Alchemy Lab - price 2320
- Frostcrag Bedroom Area - price 1547
- Frostcrag Library Area - price 1547
- Frostcrag Vault - price 1547
- Magetallow Candle Box (x2) - price 3093 each
If you already own a house and have bought items for it, this is basically the same idea. Also, the Magetallow Candle Boxes are required for using the spell making and enchanting alters.
So, after buying all of the items, the tower can now be used to its maximum capabilities. Now when you enter the tower, the wall in front of you will slowly slide open, revealing your new base of operations. A wealth of new items is now at your disposal including, an Atronach alter, spell making and enchanting alter, Alchemy conservatory, Frostcrag Apparatus table, and portals to all of the mages guild houses. The Atronach alter allows you to bring 3 salts from the same Atronach creature to summon and Atronach Familiar to do your bidding. You can choose to dismiss the creature by speaking to it. The Frostcrag Apparatus table contains different alchemy equipment.
The first area you enter is the main room. It features a library area and the Atronach, spell making, and enchanting alters. There are also two portals, one leads to the vault and the other leads to the living quarters. The living quarters features a nice selection of furniture such as, a bed, chest, cupboard, and alchemy table. There is also a bookcase which features a skill book titled "A Game at Dinner", and a jewelry box that contains a magic ring called "Pentamagic Loop." The ring features a +5 bonus to all magic skills. The alchemy conservatory is connected to the living quarters, and it contains many common and some rare ingredients. There is also a door that leads to the portals to the mages guilds. The living quarters also has a portal that leads to the top of the spire.
Back on the main floor, the second portal leads the vault. The vault is a medium sized circular room that has a very frozen look to it. There are many chests scattered throughout that you can use to store any number of items. Also, there are a bunch of Vault Guardians flying around to protect your valuables.
Verdict
Frostcrag Spire has now become my new base of operations. It offers a great deal of storage, and you no longer have to travel to the Arcane University to create spells or enchant items. Access to an alchemy conservatory is nice for boosting your alchemy skill and making potions. The only downside to this content is if you have a character that does not use magic. These characters will find practically no use for this new content. On the other hand, I would definitely recommend downloading the Wizard’s Tower if you play a magic based character.

I need to know if i put somthing in the vault will it reamin there forever even if i die or somthing?
my question is similar.
while playing a thief/magic user character, i claimed the pirate ship on the imperial city waterfront. i didn’t buy/download a plug-in upgrade like i have for my new mage’s mountain retreat. i just… moved in. eventually the low-end enchanted items i found and stored in the various chests disappeared on me. so… while i understand the technical reason for this the player character side of me thinks, well.. it’s not like i ever locked the door or anything. why should i be surprised to have been robbed right back for all my pilfering.
i guess the question is, do you know first-hand if we will we lose our precious stored goodies throughout frostcrag spire if we’ve purchased the plug-in to live there?
thx!
