The Mehrunes’ Razor downloadable content is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 250 MS points. According to Bethesda, they claim it is "one of the deepest and most challenging dungeons in all of Cyrodiil." I guess that explains why they increased the price on the download compared to the previous ones. Another key feature of this content is the Mehrunes Razor, a dagger that can inflict massive damage, and has the ability to kill enemies instantly. So, are a large dungeon and an exclusive weapon worth the increased price?

"The lost Ayleid City Varsa Baalim has been unearthed by a rogue Telvanni arch-mage, in pursuit of a fearsome Daedric Artifact, Mehrunes Razor, which he believes will give him the power he needs to topple the Imperial reign - but what horrors lie in wait beneath the Valus mountains; and can you overcome them to claim Mehrunes Razor as your own?"

Unearthing Mehrunes Razor

As with the previous downloads, the quest is immediately added to you log when the game begins. The starting point for this quest is Sundercliff Watch, which is located in Eastern Niben by Lake Canulus. Sundercliff Watch features several large areas, such as the village, forge, and commune. The village is the main area, and contains several enemies on patrol. The village also has many buildings, including a jail and barracks. The jail actually contains a prisoner in its lone cell. After reading a small document, you find out that the prisoner is a Morag Tong Assassin, and that he is possibly hiding an important document. After picking the lock to his cell, you can kill him or let him escape. I decided to take the guy out, and take his armor and document. The armor is enchanted and would work well with thief type characters. The rest of the village contains really nothing else of importance, but it is fun to explore the area and pick up some extra gold and items hidden throughout the different buildings.

The forge and commune branch off of the village. I found the forge and mine area was dull and had little going on. If you want to explore the forge area, make sure you have some cure disease potions or spells. While walking through the forge, you have a chance of contracting tunnel cough, a disease that drains your sneak ability by 15. The commune area is where you need to go to advance the quest. It is similar to the village; it contains several key items to help you gain entrance to Varsa Baalim.

Once you uncover the necessary items to break the seal to Varsa Baalim, you can enter the ancient Ayleid city and continue your quest. Varsa Baalim contains many vampire enemies, so unless you want to become one yourself, make sure to cure the disease if contracted. The underground city is not laid out like other Ayleid ruins scattered throughout Cyrodiil. Large pillars and broken walls divide the cavernous area, making it somewhat confusing to navigate. The map does help you to figure out where to go though, so you should not have to wander aimlessly. The final area of the ruins is called the Nefarnigum, and some tough foes are waiting inside. After the battle is won, you can finally claim Mehrunes Razor for yourself.
