Company of Heroes (PC) Review
March 13th, 2007 by Bob Buskirk
Mission 1
In this mission, I was charged with taking a number of gun batteries after having landed at one of the many beaches invaded on D-Day. If you’ve seen Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan, you probably have a pretty good idea of what obstacles faced the troops-and Company of Heroes as ‘em all there.
I really payed attention to the music and sound effects of the game during this mission, as I knew that I’d use few game elements other than the basic infantry maneuvers I learned in the tutorial. I was thoroughly impressed-one of the things that draws me to WW2-era films and games is the wartime soundtracks, both melodic instrumentals and popular music of the time ("Boogey-Oogy Bugle Boy" is one of my favorite songs from the era).
Mission 2
This mission is much more covert, as I was charged with guiding paratroopers to secure the road from a beach to Carentan (the focus of the third mission). It’s a night mission, so the mood is dark and subterfuge is key.
I was able to flank a lot of the enemy emplacements by being furtive and using a lot of grenades. Yes, I’m one of those people that throws grenades all the time. Fortunately for those who dislike that behavior, the throwing distance is highly limited and it really exposes your throwing unit to enemy fire.
Mission 3 & 4
In these two missions, you’re taking and defending Carentan while waiting for Able Company-a calvary unit-to arrive. There’s a lot of explosions, and most of your units will die when the Germans being shelling the town.
Final thoughts
In a recent patch, the developers added a Cinematic camera view. It’s incredible. It’s like watching a movie generated in real-time. I love it.
I’m impressed with Company of Heroes. I lost my love of RTS games shortly after entering college because I didn’t have time to play them. Company of Heroes has restored that love, and I’m sure that I’ll be playing it a lot.
My only criticism, really, is that there are a lot of cutscenes. I’d rather have the dialog and such be within the main window, much like what Blizzard does in Starcraft. This is more of a personal preference, though.
Thank you, again, Relic, for trusting your users and not requiring a CD to play. That means a lot to us. ThinkGaming gives Relic’s Company of Heroes a 10/10.
